Once bitten, twice shy

Psychological safety refers to an environment where individuals feel safe to express their thoughts, ideas, and concerns without fear of retribution, ridicule, or having their contributions undermined. However, achieving true psychological safety requires more than just words; it demands consistent actions that build trust and respect. This comic explores a common scenario where a leader’s actions contradict their words, leading to a breakdown in trust and psychological safety within the team. Specifically, it highlights how a manager’s tendency to take control of or shut down employees’ ideas and initiatives can erode the very foundation of a safe and open environment. Through this narrative, I aim to underscore the importance of aligning words with actions to create a genuinely safe space for open communication and collaboration.

Servant Leadership

Servant leadership is a leadership philosophy where the primary goal of the leader is to serve others.  This approach emphasises the well-being and development of team members, fostering a culture of trust, empathy, and collaboration.  By prioritising the needs of their team, servant leaders create an environment where individuals feel valued and respected, which is crucial for psychological safety.  In such an environment, team members are more likely to express their ideas, take risks, and admit mistakes without fear of retribution.  This openness not only enhances individual and team performance but also drives business agility and continuous improvement.  By embodying servant leadership, managers can build and maintain a psychologically safe workplace where everyone feels empowered to contribute their best.
